Frank Reid died on Saturday, January 24, 1998 from a heart attack that he suffered while coming out of a cave in Kentucky.  A funeral service was held on Saturday, January 31.  I'll post details here if they become available.

Frank was a prolific author of cave songs, as well as other songs that he sang accompanied by his guitar.  These were compiled in a xeroxed compendium of Cave and other Songs that Frank handed out at caving gatherings over the years.  My copy is dated 1995; there was a more recent one that may contain some other songs.  Frank had given me permission to post these songs several years ago, but somehow I never got around to it.

Frank will be sorely missed at cave song sessions in the future.  We will hold a memorial song session at the 1998 NSS Convention.  Check back here later for details.

I've posted Frank's songs on a separate page, with some pictures.  There is also a memorial page.  If you have other things you'd like to see here in memory of Frank, please e-mail them to me.

Another memorial page has been posted by Jim Honaker, including a resume and lots of pictures.

Friends,

It is with deep regret that I inform you that long-time Bloomington, IN,
caver and NCRC Instructor Frank Reid has passed way. On Saturday, January
24, 1998, Frank suffered a heart-attack while on a caving trip which was
being conducted in conjunction with the Crawl-a-thon at Carter Caves State
Park, KY.

At this time I do not have many details, other than that during the trip
Frank indicated he was not feeling well; he sat down to rest and then
passed out. Apparently his companions were able to revive him using CPR,
afterwhich he was rushed from the cave to the local hospital. About noon
the call came from the hospital that Frank had died.

Frank will be missed by all who knew him. He was a dedicated caver and
cave rescue instructor. Year-after-year Frank taught us how to use
technology to communicate while caving and during cave rescue operations.
He was able to make this difficult subject understandable for us, using his
gentle teaching style, unique sense of humor and incredible patience.

I would like to extend my deepest condolence to Frank's family and to his
many, many friends. As I am made aware of funeral arrangements, I will
pass them on to you.

May he rest in peace.

>Yesterday, Jan 24, Frank Reid died. He was helping lead a group in
Saltpeter Cave for the Carter Caves Crawlathon. I understand that Charlie
Bishop and Dave Kelley were with Frank not far from the entrance when Frank
said that he wasn't feeling well, and collapsed. Caver EMT people were there
very quickly, and Frank was taken to the local hospital by ambulance. I am
not sure if he passed away in the cave, in the ambulance, or at the hospital.

Larry Mullins called me last night and told me that Frank Reid died
Saturday as the result of a heart attack suffered while coming out of a
cave in (I think) Kentucky. Presumably someone else will post more details
about the death and a memorial service being planned for next Saturday in
Kentucky.

I've posted a Memorial Page to Frank on my Web Site. I'll be posting the
words to many of Frank's songs, pictures, and whatever else people send me
that they'd like to see up.

The URL is http://www.halcyon.com/samara/rstitt/frank_reid.htm

If you have something you'd like to have posted, please e-mail it to me. I
don't have a scanner so right now can't accept actual photos or slides.
