Growing Practice: Ethical
Country of Origin: USA
Organic Lemon Balm (Melissa off.) aerial parts infused in pure olive oil to saturation, 1:1.
BioChemical Class: terpenes
It easily grows in Zones 4-9. In zone 7 (where we are) it can be harvested until the end of November. It prefers full sun but is moderately shade tolerant. It grows in clumps and spreads vegetatively so it can easily spread throughout a garden until it becomes a nuisance.
When steam distilled lemon balm has a very low yield (which accounts for the high price of the essential oil).
Use of Lemon Balm is restricted in fragrance materials by IFRA, but this is controversial. For more information: see this post on the aromaconnection blog
FDA Food Additive Status: (EO and/or oleoresin) GRAS (Generally recognized as safe)
