Lemon Balm (Melissa officinalis is a perennial herb in the mint family Lamiaceae, and is native to the Mediterranean region.

It easily grows in Zones 4-9. In zone 7 (where we are) it can be harvested until the end of November. It prefers full sun but is moderately shade tolerant. It grows in clumps and spreads vegetatively so it can easily spread throughout a garden until it becomes a nuisance.

When steam distilled lemon balm has a very low yield (which accounts for the high price of the essential oil).

Used in 10-50% dilution in massage oils for soothing digestive system, calming nerves and uplifting depression and irritability associated with hormonal fluctuation. Used in childbirth. Good additive to ointments and creams for cold sores and protecting lips.
External use only. Keep refrigerated when not in use. Keep out of reach of children. May raise pressure in eyes; avoid in glaucoma.

Use of Lemon Balm is restricted in fragrance materials by IFRA, but this is controversial. For more information: see this post on the aromaconnection blog
