Plant Information for Meadow Arnica (Arnica chamissonis)

The Meadow Arnica or Silver Arnica Arnica chamissonis of the Family Asteraceae is native to the Northwest, growing in high meadows and damp places at high elevations. It has tall stems up to 36 inches supporting a single yellow flower head about1/2" in diameter appearing throughout the summer. (Europeans call this "North American arnica.")

Arnica chamissonis is one of the arnicas that contains helenalin, which is a sesquiterpene lactone that is a major ingredient in anti-inflamatory preparations, and can cause skin irritation

In Europe the rhizome is used as the medicinal part but in North America the flower is used.

Used as an additive in massage and body oils for muscular aches and pains, helps speed healing of bruises, swelling and sprains. Analgesic and anti-inflammatory.
Keep refrigerated when not in use. Keep out of reach of children.

For external use only. Do not use on broken skin.

Helanin has been known to cause skin irritation. Discontinue use if irritation occurs.

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review rates Arnica extracts as a "Cosmetic ingredient with insufficient data to support safety." Issues include potential for photosensitization, dermal sensitivity and irritation, and genotoxicity in mammalian systems.
